Thanks for attending my session!
I hope you enjoyed the conference as much as I did, and I appreciate your taking the time to attend "Master Radio Technique...Avoid Radio Traps." I promised you handouts, and that you wouldn't have to lug hard copies home. And here they are, along with some other material I think you'll find of interest.
Research: Most Popular Podcast Topics
In 2005, when The Oxford American Dictionary pronounced "podcast" its Word of the Year, I conducted a national perceptual study. I asked a sample of 1216 adults 18+, roughly 50/50 male/female, roughly-evenly-distributed geographically across the USA three things:
"What do you LIKE most about the AM/FM stations you listen to?" [verbatim responses]
Responses you will read are "what works" about radio; suggesting what-podcasters-should-NOT-try-to-compete-with.

"What do you DISLIKE most about the AM/FM stations you listen to?" [verbatim responses]
Responses point to chinks in radio's armor.

And, in what-I-believe-to-be the first-ever podcasting topic test of its kind,
“If there were FREE podcasts about the following topics, which would you download and try?”
Responses to that third question are, effectively, a podcasting "hit list. Here's your FREE download.

In 2007, advertising revenue on the Internet surpassed radio revenue.
Listeners are also migrating, as you will read in this data from Arbitron and Edison Media Research.
In your conference registration bag, you found my October newsletter.
Earlier in the week, when I spoke at there, my September newsletter was in the bag at the National Association of Broadcasters' Radio Show in Charlotte, and I wanted you to have a copy of that issue too.
In it, you will read:
> Why your most profitable podcasts might be programming that never aired.
> 2 reasons "old media" are losing advertising dollars to "new media," and how you can follow the money.
> Using the first two Quarter Hours to S-T-R-E-T-C-H TSL from your existing cume.

In Charlotte, I outlined a template for a multi-platform Internet package stations can put on the street quickly:

That's an excerpt from this session, which I've presented at two major conventions in 2007, and which I continue to offer to group meetings, in cluster Sales meetings, and at state broadcasters' conventions...

"I've been selling and managing radio for many years, and the issues you discussed could have been taken straight from the piles of paper on my desk. Thank you for distilling the murky mess that is our day to day world and showing us what ultimate solutions really look like."
Generous unsolicited praise for the session I presented at RAB2007/Dallas in February, and NAB2007/Las Vegas. If you couldn't join us, click Ben's nose below.
Included: 100+ pages of handouts, and 5 killer spec spots.

Usability design is one of the most important -- yet often least attractive -- tasks for a Web developer. Author Steve Krug lightens up the subject with good humor and excellent, to-the-point examples.
